ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Managers of Mobile and Online Programs, the Education Generalist will have a unique opportunity to develop and deliver climate change education programming across Canada using various education technologies. In their work with the Mobile Programs team, the Generalist will support the development of video content to be shown inside Ocean Wise’s six-meter inflatable dome using Nightshade, a simulation and visualization software for teaching and exploring Earth Sciences. The generalist will use Nightshade to transform 360-degree 4K video into an inspiring and empowering climate change education program. The programs will incorporate the latest scientific understanding of the drivers of climate change, current climate mitigation and adaptation efforts, and what individuals can do in their daily lives to support those efforts. Clear connections to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Some travel with Mobile Programs may be required over the summer depending on scheduling. This is an eight-month contract position with possibility of extension.
In their role with the Online team, the Generalist will support the development and delivery of programs using a variety of software and education technologies, including but not limited to:
Software:
Editing software: Adobe creative cloud (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, etc.)
Microsoft packages: PowerPoint, Teams live/webinar
Delivery software: OBS, Mhmm, Zoom, Google meets
Hardware:
Sound and lighting equipment (including greenscreen)
Remote delivery equipment (iPhone, stabilizer, tripods, headsets, etc.)
Camera equipment (DSLR)
The Youth Initiative works closely with Ocean Wise’s conservation initiatives to translate our world-class conservation research, knowledge and actions into exciting and engaging programs that empower a wide array of ocean ambassadors to make meaningful behavioral changes that positively impact our ocean.
Key Accountabilities
Collaborate closely with other Youth Initiative colleagues to design and deliver Youth programs, including online and in-person, in formal and informal settings;
Maintain and build upon knowledge of climate change, behavior change, marine animals, ecosystems and conservation issues;
Provide excellent customer service and support to all Youth program clients (principals, teachers, event organizers, participants);
Tracks and maintains program feedback records, participant numbers etc,;
Consciously desires to improve the organization and its processes by:
Collaborate closely with other Youth Initiative colleagues to design and deliver Youth programs, including online and in-person, in formal and informal settings;
Lead and aid in Emergency protocols;
Maintain and improve organizational safety standards;
Continually improve our impact on the environment and greening of operations;
Actively demonstrate Ocean Wise’s values and expectations for conduct;
Performs additional duties of a similar nature or level as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Completed a bachelor’s degree in science, cinematography, arts, education, conservation or equivalent experience;
Valid BC driver’s license in good standing;
Knowledge of marine and aquatic habitats, and conservation issues;
Experience editing and designing video content;
Experience working with children in an interpretive setting;
Experience giving live presentations both virtually and in-person;
Experience designing education, science or other programs;
Capable and comfortable driving fleet vehicles (minivan, pickup trucks);
Experience implementing and evaluating innovative educational programs.
Skills
Completed a bachelor’s degree in science, cinematography, arts, education, conservation or equivalent experience;
Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and presentation skills
Ability to work as a cooperative member of a dynamic team, as well as independently;
Strong problem solving and organizational skills, must be creative, flexible, and enthusiastic with a positive attitude;
Fluency in French with strong verbal and written French communication (preference for strong verbal skills) is an asset;
Strong customer service skills and able to interact with people of all ages;
Actively demonstrates the organization’s goals, values and mission;
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of programs;
Working knowledge of video conferencing platforms such as MS Teams and Zoom;
Working Conditions
The position will be based in Vancouver and travel to the Gastown office will be required at least once or twice a week.
Some travel with the Mobile Programs team may be required depending on scheduling. Ability to spend up to two weeks on the road, delivering programs, is required.
Exposure to seasonal temperature fluctuations in outdoor working areas;
Shared workspace in a team environment open concept office environment.
