Position: Digital Content Specialist
Term: May 2022 – March 2023 – 35 Hours per week

Refugee 613 has an exciting opportunity for a content creator with excellent Dari or Pashto writing skills to help us meet the communications needs of Afghan newcomers.

Project Overview:
With investment from IRCC, Refugee 613 is testing a new, national, digital-messaging service to improve access to information for Afghan refugees in Canada. The new service uses Telegram to provide daily informational posts related to settlement and integration, answer inquiries and refer members to service providers in their area. The goal is to complement and add value to existing settlement services and make it easier for new arrivals to find basic information quickly and easily.
Position Summary:
Refugee 613 is looking for a content creator to join the DMSI team and support the delivery of validated, easy-to-understand settlement and general information to the target audience in Dari and Pashto. Working closely with the Community Manager and the Project Coordinator, the Digital Content Specialist will research, write and edit a wide variety of relevant content in plain language to meet the needs of group members.
Main Responsibilities:
· Find existing digital content and sources for sharing in the Telegram group, adapting as needed via editing or translation
· Research, write and edit original content in plain-language versions in English, and translate into Dari and/or Pashto, including fact sheets, infographic, and social media content, in a fast-paced environment with short deadlines
· Develop content priorities based on the needs of the Telegram group in collaboration with the Community Manager and other team members
· Manage content calendar for Telegram group, including planning, scheduling and performance measurement
· Support production of infographics for distribution in the group
· Assist with translations into Dari and/or Pashto and manage translation workflow
· Ongoing collaboration with project team members to develop and implement content strategies to meet audience needs
· Perform other related duties as may be assigned

Qualifications:
· A post-secondary degree in communications, journalism or a related field, or equivalent practical experience writing and editing in a professional setting
Excellent verbal and written Dari or Pashto is mandatory, along with strong proficiency in English
· Strong digital writing skills: You know how to create very short, clear and lively content for digital platforms with excellent grammar, spelling and style, within tight deadlines.
· Plain-language expertise: You know how to make complex topics easy to understand through clear writing, use of less formal vocabulary and conversational tone.
· Software skills: You can use platforms like Google Drive, MS Suite, Canva or the Adobe creative suite in multiple languages, and you have experience using content management systems like Asana, Buffer and Air Table.
· Experience with digital storytelling for diverse audiences: You have experience writing or producing content for newcomers and understand their information practices.
· Excellent strategic communications skills: You know how to develop and implement strategies to meet audience needs on a variety of platforms.
· Experience working with people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
NOTE: This position is based in Ottawa, Ontario, with a possibility of remote work within Ontario only.
Salary & Benefits: Range – $56,397 to $57, 548 per annum for 35 hours per week. Comprehensive benefits plan including health, dental, RRSP plan, and generous leave entitlement.
