Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) provides service to approximately 5,900 students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12 in 34 schools and is one of the largest employers in the Grande Prairie/Spirit River region.
PWPSD manages one of the largest transportation systems in the province of Alberta. Each day, approximately 100 school bus drivers travel more than 14,225 kilometers in a total service area of 16,519 square kilometers.
We invite applications for a Full-Time Student Transportation Coordinator (40 hours/week). Shift schedule is 7am to 4pm, Monday – Friday.
Duties and Responsibilities
Route Management
- Designing, implementing, and scheduling of computerized bus routing using transportation software
- Revision of regular routes to meet operational standards, address safety issues, and improve efficiencies, ensure compliance with district criteria and all applicable legislation
- Yearly grade advancement
- Optimize bus routes as directed in order to create cost efficiencies
- Prepare reports on routing and route optimization for the Director of Transportation
- Managing and organizing charter bus requests for internal and external charters
- Preparing packages for school bus driver start-up meetings (August)
- Coordinate individualized busing request with Student Support Services for students with special requirements (ie. wheelchairs, underage students, etc.)
- Create and adjust school boundaries as directed
- Troubleshoot system malfunction and liaise between Tech Services and Versa Trans support
- Build computerized mapping in growth areas
- Provide reports and data analysis for the Director of Transportation
- Prepare data for the grant funding application
- Provide direction on messaging for Power Announcement call-outs
Bus Driver Training and Safety
- Conduct meetings with school bus drivers regarding compressed school week schedules
- Monitor bus operator compliance of Alberta Transportation regulations and Alberta Traffic Safety Act
- Obtain MELT Class 2S license and conduct assessment for S Endorsement certification
- Provide advice and guidance to school bus drivers in regards to PWPSD policies and procedures
- Review and approve yearly route assessment submitted by school bus drivers
- Assist Director of Transportation with bus cancellations
Financial
- Assist Director of Transportation with Alberta Education yearly funding application
- Manage department payroll expectations and bus driver payroll entry
Education
- Business diploma or degree in a related field or a combination of relevant education and experience
The following would be considered an asset. Alternatively, the successful candidate must be willing to obtain these during employment:
- Class 2 Driver’s License
- MELT Class 2 S Instructor License
Experience
Experience in the following would be considered as asset:
- Student Transportation Department
- School or business environment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- High aptitude and knowledge of routing software
- Excellent analytical skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to remain calm and act decisively in emergency situations
- Adjust rapidly to changes and tempo or work activities to multi-task effectively
- Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and written with interal and external stakeholders
- Clear understanding of policies, regulations, and procedures governing Student Transportation
- Basic understanding of communication equipment (i.e. two-way radio)

Terms and conditions of employment are outlined in Policy GGG: Personnel Policy for Non-Teaching Staff. The salary range for this position is $68,000 to $88,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
