About Our Opportunity
Under the general supervision of the Foreman Wildlife Park, or designate, the Carpenter is responsible to supervise a team of Wildlife Park Attendants in the construction and maintenance of infrastructure, equipment, grounds, enclosures and buildings, Ducks Unlimited Interpretive Centre and trail system of this 40 acre facility. The Carpenter is also responsible to assist as needed with animal care, provide information to the visiting public on facility and programs in addition to information and training sessions to other staff and volunteers.
Primary Accountabilities
- Determining quantities and types of supplies required to perform tasks in the most cost-efficient manner. Construction and maintenance of buildings, enclosures, shelters, fences, water supply, facility infrastructure, grounds and operation of machinery, equipment, hand, and power tools.
- Provides input into the development and implementation of maintenance programs, pertinent policies and procedures and specification/design of buildings and enclosures,
- Comply with all requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, including participation in inspections and facilitation of training and information sessions and make recommendations to Management on issues and solutions.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will have a Carpentry Diploma (2 year) plus 2 years experience in the construction field, or Carpentry Certificate (1 year) plus 3 years experience in the construction field, or High school equivalency plus 4 years experience in the construction field.
- Must have demonstrated ability to lead and supervise a team of maintenance employees.
- Must have a good understanding of maintenance requirements and tasks and have experience in the maintenance and operation of light machinery, vehicles and heavy equipment. Knowledgeable in the maintenance of manual and power tools. Must have the ability to calibrate and adjust equipment to ensure it is working efficiently and safely.
- Must be familiar with the Water and Wastewater Facilities and Public Drinking Water Supplies Regulations and accept participation in the Operator Certification Program.
- Must have a good working knowledge of computer software to draw-up construction plans, word processing, databases, Internet, and e-mail for record updates, communication, and completion of assigned tasks.
- Must be knowledgeable of the NS Building Codes requirements and have a good working knowledge of and be able to perform carpentry, plumbing and electrical tasks. Must be able to construct structures from drawings, sketches, and blueprints.
- Must be skilled in the use and maintenance of various power tools, chainsaws, lawn mowers and whipper snippers in the regular maintenance of the Park facility.
- Must be able to operate equipment such as farm tractor or back-hoe for fencing, snow removal, site preparation, landscaping, and road maintenance.
- Must have a good awareness and understanding of the Wildlife Park’s mandate. Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety, other Department Acts and Regulations, Park policies and directives and provide recommendations to Management on hazards, safe work practices / procedures and concerns.

Working Conditions
Constantly lifting heavy objects, walking, standing, shovelling, snow removal, capturing/handling wildlife, use of hand and power equipment, dealing with difficult people, operating vehicles and ATV’s. Public’s high expectations of facility, personal safety and services received can be very demanding. The necessity to complete tasks outside of scheduled hours in order to ensure the well being of wildlife, visitors and facility.
Regularly working under conditions of dust, moisture, chemical cleaning substances, grease/oil/gas, extreme temperatures and conditions, odours, noise, power equipment and extended hours. Occasional exposure to human and animal waste, zoonosis, injuries from animals, unprocessed animal feeds, drugs and contaminated needles.
Additional Information
The Carpenter will require the following certifications:
- Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Drivers License
- Valid first aid/ CPR certification (basic or intermediate)
- Hazard Assessment and Identification Certificate
- WHMIS Certificate
The Successful Candidate will need to provide a clear NS Child Abuse Register and Criminal Check.

Pay Grade: MOS 14
Salary Range: $1,899.77 – $1,959.88 Bi-Weekly
