Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Manager, Solution Development, Information Technology Services (IT Services), the Systems Developer (Developer), in cooperation with a project team or business unit representative, is responsible to design, develop, implement, and troubleshoot software applications that support the university’s teaching and learning and/or administrative services. The Developer has a strong understanding of computer programming languages and uses them to build robust applications based on designs and workflow diagrams. The Developer also conducts systems analysis to ensure programs run efficiently and meet new technology demands. The Developer collaborates with business analysts and systems analysts and is a key member of solution development teams who assists managers, engineers, analysts, and technical operations staff to test software, identify problems and debug programs when problems arise.

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Plans, designs, codes, tests and debugs programs or application software. Analyzes and revises existing system logic difficulties, modifies procedures, and documents all program changes.
• Arranges project requirements in programming sequence by analyzing requirements, preparing a workflow chart and diagram using knowledge of computer capabilities, subject matter, programming language, and logic.
• Confirms program operation by conducting tests, modifying program sequence and/or codes.
• Participates in planning and designing application architecture, security, and related server environments.
• Provides technical support and assistance to users. Assists with the identification and resolution of complex issues with existing applications, database designs and maintenance problems.
• Maintains computer systems and programming guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.
• Participates in application design meetings and prepares requirements and design specifications.
• Works with a business analyst to determine client’s business requirements and translates into actionable work plans.
• Assists with cost/benefit analyses of proposed systems and applications.
• Assists in establishing project schedules, ensures assigned projects follow a schedule; adheres to task and project deadlines; escalates potential delays to management and recommends possible solutions.
• Understands IT industry best practices, standards, and resources to ensure continuous optimization of information technology delivery effectiveness.
• Works with representatives from other areas to address software integration options and alternatives to meet the desired business objectives.
• Updates technical and business knowledge to remain current on changing systems and technologies; recommends updates to existing systems based on new technology trends.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• University degree with a concentration in computer science, information technology or related technical field combined with several years developing, implementing, and maintaining information systems.
• Experience using programming languages such as with JAVA, JavaScript, PHP, HTML, CSS, SQL and PeopleCode/PeopleTools.
• Experience with frameworks such as Symfony, Struts, React, Bootstrap, Enterprise Java Beans (EJB).
• Experience with databases such as Oracle and MySQL considered an asset.
• Programming experience and knowledge of web technologies and tools, data mapping, mining, and visualization is an asset.
• Knowledge of the functions of higher education administrative departments and the supporting information systems is an asset.
• Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
