About the Opportunity

Taking the lead from the Director of Technology, the Director, Software Engineering oversees our incredible software engineering and development team in both professional and technical leadership. This critical role drives strategic planning on backend and frontend development, building a high-performance, scalable and robust industry leading real estate technology stack for rennie, our advisors and industry partners.

You have a thoughtful passion for people, mentoring and leadership, and supporting the needs of the team. You actively participate in innovating our software platform, alongside supporting the growth of our team in a wide array of technologies including cloud infrastructure, data architecture and pipelines, GraphQL, Ruby on Rails, Node and React.

Responsibilities

• Provides technical leadership to the software development team.

• Mentors and trains other team members building web applications while promoting quality, security, scalability and performance that the team is proud of.

• Maintains empathy for the team by keeping awareness of engineering and development processes and practices through, one on one touch points, conducting code reviews, research, or working on non-critical path bugs and/or features.

• Contributes to all phases of the development life cycle, including front-end and back-end, delivery using continuous integration and continuous deployment across multiple platforms.

• Leads by example in programming standards, by writing clean, maintainable, and efficient code in a test-driven development process.

• Manages project related operating budgets.

• Collaborates with team members to ensure deadlines are met.

• Participates in rennie Tech events, Friday family lunches.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with rennie’s programs and policies.

• Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; and, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

• Helps define developer career progression with titles, roles and responsibilities.

• Focuses on individual and team short-term and long-term goals, growth and KPI’s.

• Provides input and participates in the hiring process of additional team members.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in a software engineering / development role.

• 3+ years in a management and mentorship role within a software team.

• Undergraduate degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, MIS or equivalent.

• Experience recruiting, hiring, and training.

• Experience architecting and designing new systems and managing current systems.

• Strong knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and devops.

• Experience communicating with users, other teams and leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy.

• Hands-on expertise in varying technologies, ranging from front-end user interfaces through to back-end systems and all areas in between.

• Experience delivering user focused, innovative, simple solutions to complex problems.

• Strong analytical skills, collaborative problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.

• Outstanding judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions using evidence to support your decisions.

• Creative, flexible, and innovative team leader, with a commitment to excellence and high standards.
