Our downtown Toronto client is seeking a Legal Assistant with firm level experience in either or both of class action and insurance litigation. The ideal Legal Assistant will have sound technical and computer knowledge as well as excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills. Ideally1-2 or more years of experience in the field is desired. This role has an option to be mostly remote once the employee is trained and through an onboarding period.
Your responsibilities in this role will include:
– Manage legal research and investigative tasks, including obtaining information or documents from outside parties, as directed
– Round up documents for photocopying/scanning
– Retrieve and search for electronic documents from a variety of court and agency web sites
– Be in charge of matter management and record keeping
– Develop correspondence and memorandum
– Manage E-Filing
– Assemble documents and arrange data as directed by lawyers and clerks
– Organize computer database input and retrieval
– Execute word processing, filing and faxing
– Ensure copied documents are duplicates of their original documents
– Experience in drafting legal court documents, such as pleadings, motions, affidavits and subpoenas; transactional documents, and closing documents
– Conducting routine discovery
– Understand how to organize and track files for important transactions or case documents, including pleadings and voluminous discovery documents; creating and maintaining a case-management database
– 1+ years of previous legal work experience and a dedication to integrity
– Experience assisting lawyers in preparing for transactional closings, depositions, hearings, trials and conferences; completing many administrative tasks, including, working on individual cases or transactions
– Class action litigation experience preferred
– Insurance defense experience is an asset
