Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, the Mechanical Engineer will provide Mechanical Engineering services and knowledge for capital projects and maintenance on the Fort Site. Create or alter application appropriate documents, specifications, drawings & packages with a focus on safety, reliability, performance and production improvements or optimization. Provides direction to internal and external stakeholders on mechanical issues and requirements.
The position will be based out of our Fort Saskatchewan plant site.
Accountabilities
Contribute to the development, delivery and optimization of a E&P business plan, aligned with the Asset Management strategy, for a 3-12 month period.
Provide engineering design to projects that are aligned with the E&P business plan, following the applicable mechanical standards and procedures.
Provide services to specialist engineering functions, and collaborate to provide engineering solutions that benefit the Fort Site operations.
Identify opportunities for workflow improvement including removing work inefficiencies and duplication, taking the appropriate action to resolve issues.
Complete work in compliance with current regulatory requirements, and consistent with Sherritt’s objectives to deliver zero harm to employees, the environment, neighboring communities.
Identify HSE hazards, risks, controls, and opportunities for improvement within projects and daily duties; and follow-up with mitigating actions where applicable.
Communicate/identify improvements/issues with the existing standards, processes, and procedures with the intent to continuously improve, and update documents as required.
Incorporate safety in design concepts as an integral part of any engineering activity or scoping effort.

Collaborate with stakeholders (including asset management, operations, and maintenance), to develop effective project solutions that are aligned with the Fort Site business plan.
Follow the Plant Engineering program to ensure that policies, standards, practices, and procedures are adhered to.
Clearly document and effectively communicate to the required cross-functional teams, as per established procedures.
Validate scope definition to create accurate scopes of work and minimize rework and misapplied efforts.
Identify, investigate, and implement new technologies and procedures where reliability, productivity or performance improvements can be realized.
Contribute to optimized performance of Mechanical Engineering team by following good or best practices, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and lean thinking, implementing technical innovation, and following management systems.
Provide mechanical engineering services, support specialist engineering functions, and collaborate to provide engineering solutions that benefit the Fort Site operations.
Provide engineering designs to projects that are aligned with the Engineering & Projects business plan, following the applicable Engineering standards and procedures.
Validate the project scope by applying mechanical engineering principles to identify the problem to be solved by the project.
Apply engineering design and problem solving principles to complete the mechanical engineering design on projects, ensuring schedule, quality, cost and objective are achieved.
Contribute to the design of multi-disciplinary projects to assure fit-for-purpose construction, and with complete and accurate documentation.
Develop and review mechanical documents, i.e. Engineering and construction work packages, piping/equipment specifications and drawings, vendor packages, DBM, WSEP.
Independently manage small projects (maintenance).
Ensure all project work is documented and reviewed.
Qualifications and Skills
B. Sc. Mechanical Engineering or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology
Registered in Alberta as a Member-in-Training (E.I.T) or CET.
2 + years of relevant experience.
Working knowledge in applicable standards, i.e. ASME, CSA, PCC, ABSA, OH&S Regulations and Acts.
Demonstrated capability to apply the relevant knowledge and technical skills to problems and identify relevant factors so as to make sound engineering judgement.
Ability to work with engineering tools, i.e. PV Elite, Caesar II.
Ability to read and create technical drawings and documents.
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
Lean thinking/continuous improvement skills.
