Required Education, Knowledge, Qualifications And Experience
University degree, diploma or a certificate from a recognized institution in communications, journalism, technology or public relations or a minimum of three (3) years related communications experience
Accreditation, training or experience in access to information and protection of privacy legislation and experience in records management processessystems
Experience with digital photography and media
Proficiency with desktop publishing applications
Advanced knowledge of business English, spelling and punctuation
Experience in search engine optimization technologies
Experience working with web-based content management systems
Knowledge of web-based standards such as XML, HTML, PHP, and Flash
Good working knowledge of a broad array of technology applications, including School Messenger, website content management, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, etc.
Understanding of social media technologies such as Twitter, and Facebook
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
Required Skills And Abilities
Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written to write and format moderately complex correspondence, including media releases, memos, letters, social media postings, etc.
The ability to find and tell stories in a compelling way, with excellent writing and editing skills for a variety of different mediums and for a variety of audiences
Strategic communications vision and planning skills in order to lead internal and external communications
Excellent listening skills and ability to carry out directions in a timely manner
Excellent time management skills, including punctuality
Ability to work in a team oriented, collaborative environment
Knowledge of applicable data privacy laws
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to prioritize multiple demands and effectively manage time
Ability to deal effectively with a broad range of members of the public, including parents

Duties And Responsibilities
Without restricting the generality of this job description, the Communications Officer shall perform such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned included but not restricted to the following:
Develop and implement communications strategies and initiatives that resonate with students, staff, parents, communities and stakeholders and promote the Division’s schools, innovations, successes and challenges, including Education Week, system events, performance results, and selected school and student accomplishments
Working in consultation with senior administrative and school-based staff, produce informative, engaging and timely communications materials for the Division such as promotional materials, news releases, newsletters, communications plans, reports and other publications and written materials, and content for the SECPSD internal and external websites, social media pages and other electronic communications
Act as the overall content manager for the Division’s website
Creatively build and reinforce consistent branding and corporate identity across all internal and external communications channels
Create, manage and maintain an organized, easy to access library of photographs, videos, brochures and other publications
Be well-versed in The Local Authority of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act as it relates to school division business
Provides communication consultation services to all departments within the Division as well as provides communication support services to schools
Act as a communications advisor to the Director of Education
Be knowledgeable about and supportive of Administrative Procedures and directives
Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to an educational institution providing services to children
Be willing to engage in lifelong learning with respect to professional development, training, in-services and courses of study
Perform other duties as may be required or assigned by the Director of Education
Salary & Benefits
Salary dependent on experience. SECPSD offers a full benefit package and an employer defined pension plan.
