Job Description Summary
The UBC Dietetics Program is a five-year nationally-accredited health professional training program offered by the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. UBC offers the only dietetics degree program in British Columbia. This position is responsible for educational planning, development, assessment, delivery and evaluation related to the UBC Dietetics Program.
Organizational Status
The Program is complex and province-wide; therefore, strong educational leadership is needed to ensure its successful operation and outcomes. The Program has both campus-based and practice-based education components. The final program year involves full time structured practice-based education placements, delivered within eight health authority sites across BC. Student placements are supervised by approximately 300 preceptors (practitioners who assume this educational role on behalf of UBC). To ensure that students achieve required knowledge and skills for professional practice, the Program regularly reviews and revisits pedagogical models and teaching and learning strategies in use.
The position works in close collaboration with a large number of stakeholders, including students, preceptors, site internship coordinators, student assistants, contractors and UBC faculty and staff. The faculty member designated as Dietetics Program Leader provides general supervision. This is a high-profile educational leadership position and the incumbent must be able to represent the Faculty locally, regionally, and nationally.
Work Performed
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Successful UBC Dietetics Program operations require the Dietetics Education Coordinator to make independent and timely decisions related to admissions, curriculum, program operations, and student and professional support. Poor performance in these areas could negatively impact stakeholder perceptions of and commitment to the Dietetics Program, jeopardizing program sustainability. Student ability to meet program requirements could also be negatively impacted. Errors in judgement could cause hardship, financial loss and/or affect the integrity and reputation of the Program, Faculty and the University.
Supervision Received
Works within program and departmental guidelines under the general supervision of the faculty member designated as Dietetics Program Leader. Consults the Dietetics Program Leader about all significant and complex issues. Work is reviewed in terms of quality and effectiveness in meeting educational and other goals.
