Job Summary
The Employer & Alumni Engagement (E&EA) Advisor is responsible for researching, initiating, developing, and managing employer and alumni relationships to enhance the career development and employer engagement activity for UBC Vancouver students. The E&EA Advisor works with a team of colleagues within the Career Centre, as well as Alumni UBC to build effective and sustainable employer relationships that position alumni as employers, with the potential of fostering deeper relationships with the University and its students.
In collaboration with campus partners and program stakeholders, the E&EA Advisor strategically manages the delivery of services and support provided to employers who are engaging with and recruiting UBC students and alumni, in order to create effective student-employer and student-alumni experiences. Additionally, the E&EA Advisor consults with the community about employment needs, international on-campus recruitment programs, services and systems for employers and alumni, which are in line with the University s mission; coordinated innovative events designed to assist students or alumni explore careers (fairs, expos, mentorship, and panel discussions) and expand professional networks.
The E&AE Advisor is an active member of professional associations and industry communities and is able to effectively leverage significant industry knowledge and extensive professional networks to cultivate diverse employer and alumni networks with the Career Centre and Alumni UBC, and facilitate meaningful connections for students to the world of work.
Organizational Status
The Career Centre facilitates and enhances student learning through career building enriched educational experiences. The Centre is a central point for all graduate and undergraduate students and employers on the UBC Vancouver campus to meet, connect, network and build relationships, as well as to research and explore career options. The Career Centre provides all UBC students access and connection to workplace learning, mentoring, volunteer and leadership opportunities, and offers career and employment-related services to students, academic departments, employers, and alumni.
Reporting to the Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement, the Employer and Alumni Engagement Advisor works in collaboration with Career Centre staff, Alumni UBC, Alumni Affairs, campus career partners, Faculties, Corporate Relations, Student Services units, Co-op Programs, other departments, and student organizations, including the AMS and GSS.
Work Performed
This role has four key responsibilities:
DECISION MAKING:
In conjunction with the Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement, makes independent decisions and recommendations in areas of planning, organizing and scheduling of work that are within budget guidelines and overall strategy of the Unit. Exercises judgment in dealing with employers, faculty members and students.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position represents the University and capacity and potential of UBC students externally to the employer community and more broadly. Incorrect decisions/ judgment will directly affect the UBC s reputation with key community leaders, employers, senior executives, and alumni of the university. Poor representation, inability to respond quickly and effectively and inaccurate information or a lack of strategic interaction and/or inefficient service would have impact on the employment of students, the operations of the programs, and the reputation of the University.
Supervision Received
The incumbent works independently, under guidance from the Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement, using own judgment to make decisions on achieving specific goals. The incumbent must exercise initiative and sound judgment in making decisions and planning and executing Career Centre services and programs. Must demonstrate tact in dealing with faculty, staff, students, alumni and the public. Works in close cooperation with Career Centre staff, keeping the Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement informed through informal and formal sessions and written reports.
Supervision Given
The incumbent uses judgment to make operational decisions to achieve specific goals. Potential to supervise the recruitment, hiring and performance management of Work Learn student assistants. Oversees the training of volunteers involved with the various events. Assists with the training and supervision of support staff and training of new management and professional staff in the Career Centre.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in relevant discipline (management, human resources, business administration) preferred.
Experience in employer relations, account management, business development, recruitment, business administration, or human resource management.
Broad industry knowledge, extensive professional networks, and experiences in current best practices in on-campus recruiting.
Experience working collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-faceted team environment.
Familiarity with marketing and communications practices, career development/education strategies, Canadian Association of Career Educators (CACEE) standards and guidelines for ethical recruitment, human rights, labour legislation and current human resources practices.
Knowledge of local, national, and international labour markets. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
Marketing Skills Preferred.
Demonstrated ability to prospect, develop and sustain productive professional relationships with multiple and diverse stakeholders.
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and the occasional weekend throughout the year to attend Career Centre, employer or related professional events at various locations on campus and in the community.
Ability to manage and advise campus-based career programs through an educational lens, ensuring student learning remains central to all decisions and planning; while working with diverse student populations.
Self-direction and individually motivated to take initiative and learn.
Ability to develop and manage a budget.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, juggle complex tasks, and meet deadlines under pressure.
Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and to work effectively with all levels at the university.
Ability to supervise, coach, provide mentorship/feedback and delegate work to student workers.
