Job Summary
This position is responsible for developing and managing a diverse array of analytics, research evaluation and reporting functions: including data collection, data integration, data analysis, interpretation and visualization of data for the UBC Faculty of Medicine (FoM) and Canada’s Immuno-Engineering and Biomanufacturing Hub (CIEBH) (the ‘Hub’). The Manager contributes to the development of analytics strategy for FoM Office of Research and CIEBH, as well as the implementation of unit activities to achieve strategic success. This includes but is not limited to managing the development of metrics and measures to provide evaluation data and key performance indicators, demonstrating the impact and excellence of the Faculty as required for the ongoing academic (i.e., internal and external) reviews of FoM Research Centres and Institutes, as well as for strategic initiatives and special projects for the FoM (e.g., strategic planning; annual and internal reports), and for CIEBH (e.g., progress reports and other unit reports). The evaluation data may include comparative data at the national and international levels for benchmarking and performance measuring purposes in order to assess productivity and to evaluate research impact and influence of the FoM and CIEBH. Major responsibilities of the role include designing, collecting, analyzing, and interpreting evaluation data, including bibliometric, grant funding, and intellectual property data. The incumbent will also conduct additional data and metadata analysis, such as social network analysis. The position will also play a role in the administration of research centres and institutes within the FoM. The incumbent will provide support to the FoM Office of Research in the initiations and planning of the academic reviews of research centres and institutes, as well as provide input, advice, and guidance in the creation and/or dissolution processes of Research Centres and Institutes within the FoM. This position requires a high degree of knowledge of analytics data and methodology and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders both internal and external to FoM, the University and CIEBH. In addition, this position employs project management expertise and methodologies as a means to ensure successful completion of project components and deliverables.

Canada’s Immuno-Engineering and Biomanufacturing Hub (CIEBH) (the ‘Hub’) aims to align the critical mass of immuno-engineering with biomanufacturing and public health strengths concentrated in BC academic institutions and industry, with our Pan-Canadian, multidisciplinary, multisectoral coalition of partner institutions across six provinces. CIEBH’s vision is to make Canada a global powerhouse for developing next-generation immune-based therapies in response to pandemics and other health threats that can be rapidly produced domestically using the latest innovations in biomanufacturing. Through strong and coordinated governance, CIEBH will facilitate multidisciplinary applied research, increase specialized infrastructure, and support training and talent development in biomanufacturing in order to accelerate the translation of promising research into commercially viable products and processes.
This position reports to the Associate Director, Research Programs and Administration, and the Executive Director, CIEBH. Internally within FoM, the incumbent will also develop, foster and maintain highly functional collaborations with the Investigators, Directors and senior administrators of FoM Research Centre and Institutes, the Heads, Directors, and senior administrators in the Departments and Schools, as well as other administrative units within the FoM. External to the FoM, this position will also establish productive relationships with staff at the Office of Research Services (ORS), the University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO), and other units within the Office of the Vice-President Research & International (VPRI). External to the University, the incumbent may also liaise and build collaborations with partners at health authorities, non-profit organizations, industry, as well as other universities.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position is responsible for a high degree of self-direction and is required to exercise excellent judgement and performance in all areas. Must be able to work independently and assume full responsibility for their decisions. Error in performance of the above-related duties could have significant impact on the effectiveness, image, and reputation of the Faculty of Medicine and CIEBH both locally and internationally. The position requires the successful candidate to perform their duties with very strong attention to detail. Providing incomplete or inaccurate information could result in misinformation and misstatements on the part of the Vice Dean, Research or Senior Director, Research/Executive Director, CIEBH to funding agencies, UBC senior administration, and external stakeholders. Erroneous or incomplete information provided to the research community could impact funding success or result in missed opportunities. The impact of incorrect data analysis and decision could severely impact the outcome of the Faculty of Medicine Research Centre and Institute academic review process. The results of data analytics, reports and research metrics are being used to evaluate the ongoing effectiveness of the Faculty of Medicine Research Centres and Institutes, as well as to provide guidance to the development and implementation of the Faculty of Medicine’s Strategic Plan, and to leverage and maximize the successes of large-scale institutional research funding proposals.

This position will report to the Associate Director, Research Programs and Administration and Executive Director, CIEBH, and will also receive guidance from the Senior Director, Research and the Vice Dean, Research. This position will be expected to work independently in accordance with established objectives, and exercise initiative and judgement in performing all work-related functions.

Responsible for the performance of support staff and work learn students as required. Provides direction and/or training around data collection and analysis, and processes for faculty, staff and work learn students. Collaborates with a wide range of internal and external partners.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation preferred. Master’s degree in a relevant discipline preferred. Experience working in an environment involving research, analysis and measurement or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with the University’s research metrics, structures, policies and procedures preferred. Extensive understanding of concepts of key performance indicators, outcome measures and benchmarking. Advanced knowledge of bibliometric data, quantitative evaluation, grant funding and application procedures as relevant to UBC. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to identify and correct missing and incomplete data. Strong project management skills, with the ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple priorities effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
Excellent research, analytical, negotiation, partnership development, project management, organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to deal tactfully with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Mastery of English grammar and punctuation is essential, with the ability to read health research text analytically and critically, and make substantive editorial recommendations to improve readability, clarity and impact. Excellent political acuity, tact, judgment and discretion. Ability to interpret and evaluate policy and procedural requirements. Must be highly self-motivated and sustain a high degree of initiative. Proven ability to analyze, prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Proven judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in areas where there are no established policies or guidelines. Ability to take initiative, manage effectively and meet goals in a complex environment. Ability to foresee, prevent and resolve conflicts and other problems.
Ability to design and conduct surveys. Excellent computer literacy and typing skills. Proven experience in qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, including experience in data management and reporting preparation through a variety of software and tools. Experience conducting literature searches and literature reviews using academic journal article databases i.e. PubMed and Web of Science. Experience creating web based forms and surveys an asset. Excellent knowledge of databases and tools such as RISe, SciVal, InCites, Web of Science, Scopus, and UCINet. Skills in graphic design programs i.e., Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign and graphic visualization software (i.e.,VOSviewer) an asset.
