Job Summary
The Manager, Workplace Learning is responsible for advancing the University’s goals with respect to enriched educational experiences and career development for UBC undergraduate and graduate students through experiential workplace learning opportunities both on and off campus. The incumbent leads the overall strategy for employment, volunteer and internship opportunities coordinated through the UBC Career Centre for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni; internal and external employer relationships; the development and strategic management all aspects of UBC s wage subsidy programs for students; the implementation and strategic use of the Centre s CRM technology, and; liaises with units and programs within the university to promote co-operative and collaborative communication with external employers and organizations.
Organizational Status
The Manager, Workplace Learning is a member of the UBC Career Centre staff team. The Centre is a hub that facilitates and enhances student learning through career building enriched educational experiences. Through orientation and peer mentoring, the Centre supports new students to become successful university learners, prepared to achieve their academic, personal, and career goals. It is a central point for all graduate and undergraduate students and employers on the UBC Vancouver campus to meet, connect, network and build relationships; and to research and explore career options. The Centre connects students to workplace learning, mentoring, volunteer and leadership opportunities; and offers career- and employment-related services to students, academic departments, employers, and alumni.
Reporting to the Managing Director, UBC Career Centre, the Manager, Workplace Learning, leads a team of career and experiential learning educators, employer relations specialists, event planners, administrative staff, student workers, interns and volunteers. As a member of an integrated unit leadership team, the incumbent will oversee the Centre s experiential workplace learning and employer engagement strategy and operations.
The incumbent builds and sustains crucial external and internal relationships to advance the University s goals of supporting student learning and preparing career-ready graduates through workplace experiences. Externally, the Manager, Workplace Learning is responsible for building relationships with local, national and international employers, organizations, and industry association representatives ranging from senior level executives to human resources staff. Internally, the incumbent works in close collaboration with Faculties and units both within the Vice President s Students portfolio and across the University, the AMS/GSS and student groups, and all UBC experiential program service providers including undergraduate research, cooperative education, internship, international learning, volunteer, service learning, to cultivate a broad range of experiential and employment opportunities for UBC students and alumni.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Manager, Workplace Learning represents students and the University in a variety of internal and external venues. Incorrect decisions/ judgment will directly affect the UBC s reputation with the employer community and future UBC alumni. Ineffective budget planning and management will have significant operational, learning, and reputational consequences. Incorrect decisions will have impact on the employment of students, the operations of the programs, and the reputation of the Faculties and the University.
Supervision Received
Works independently, under general guidance from the Director, UBC Career Centre. Collaborates regularly with the Managing Director, Student Development & Services, and the unit leadership team in setting the strategic direction for the unit, and priorities of workplace learning and employer and community relations.
Supervision Given
Hires, supervises and manages the performance of the workplace learning team. Leads cross-functional teams and project teams. Hires and manages contract work performed by outside suppliers such as market research firms.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five to six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred. Prior higher education experience an asset. Experience designing and delivering complex programs including evaluating and measuring program effectiveness and outcomes required. Demonstrated ability to strategically design, implement, and evaluate experiential learning programs and educational curricula. Ability to strategically manage a complex budget with multiple funding sources. Ability to work effectively in teams and to develop and sustain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, employers, volunteers, and community members. Demonstrated experience in supervising and managing staff, preferably in a higher education environment. Ability to delegate, lead, motivate, coach and train staff. Excellent interpersonal skills and supervisory skills. Demonstrated ability to apply and evaluate literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage, and transform evidence-based programs and services. Excellent written and oral communication skills. A demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities of students and promote inclusion. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Further language abilities an asset. Excellent computer skills and willingness to learn new systems. Knowledge of career, employment and job search strategies used by students and alumni. Knowledge of Canadian Association of Career Educators (CACEE) standards and guidelines for ethical recruitment. Familiarity with human rights, labour legislation and current human resources practices. Knowledge of current trends in higher education, career development, graduate employability, and local, national, and international labour markets. Ability to work under pressure of critical deadlines. Ability to manage the complexity inherent within a multi-faceted work environment focused on broad outcomes for students. Knowledge of University systems, structures, processes, and decision making structures is an asset. Valid BC Drivers License and own transportation required. Ability to incorporate a varied workday (i.e. attend a variety of evening and weekend events year round).
