General Accountability
This position is responsible for providing surveying, mapping, CADD, GIS and related technical support and expertise for the design and construction of transit lines, transit sites and associated facilities. The incumbent follows surveying and mapping standards and best practices, and performs daily work as directed by the Supervisor. The incumbent searches and maintains surveying, mapping and construction records; performs field surveys, office computations, data analysis, and CADD drafting; supervises contractors involved in measuring track layout, components and topography; schedules, monitors and reviews the work of technical staff and technical consultants both in the field and in the office. Strict adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations is required.
Key Job Functions
Perform digital mapping work, extract available mapping, search survey and construction contract records for related data.
Prepare and plan fieldwork, including discussing field survey assignments and goals, and finding techniques and methods to perform the work safely.
Perform in-house field surveys, assuming the role and responsibilities of crew chief and an OHSA competent field supervisor.
Download, process, inspect, and evaluate field survey data; import into CADD to process, filter and clearly present results.
Monitor field surveys performed by contractors and technical staff, providing clear instructions and ensuring compliance with safety requirements and assignment details.
Review and audit survey results, reports, and CADD files, and perform field checks to identify and resolve deficiencies.
Review drawings and interpret track geometry specifications.
Inspect track work and ensure tracks are aligned in accordance with approved specifications, design drawings, and the TTC Design Manual.
Support field investigation to obtain required measurements and any other data to assist with the failure investigation.
Arrange for layout and inspection of sub-assemblies of track components in the yard to prevent unexpected geometry problems during site installation.
Ensure track work is at correct grades in the yard layouts to achieve the comparative track deformation as expected on site, based on topography records.
Establish and maintain an organized system of geometry measurements and check at every stage of construction.
Ensure all stakeholders understand control points, reference points and physical layout marks during construction.
Identify, inspect, and protect control points during construction, and maintain their visibility throughout the project.
Inspect track components and castings to ensure they meet contract specification/drawing tolerances.
Participate in the TTC Customer Service Ambassador Program.

Education and Experience
Completion of a post secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Civil Engineering) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
Must have, or acquire OACETT or P.Eng certification within a period established by management.
Additional Requirements
Demonstrated related work experience in surveying and/or track inspection;
Knowledge of surveying and mapping methods and practices for the design and construction of transit projects with emphasis on control surveying, topographic surveying, property surveying, utility surveying, deformation monitoring and other design survey work;
Sound knowledge of track construction practices, and track design concepts;
Proficiency in Geographic Coordinate Systems their relationships and conversions, GPS vs UTM and City surveying practices;
Comprehensive knowledge of the OHSA (Occupational Health & Safety Act);
Working knowledge of applicable federal, provincial, and municipal guidelines, codes, regulations and standards;
Sound judgment, strong critical thinking, problem solving and organizational ability; effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to plan, co-ordinate and direct activities of others, as well as the ability to communicate and coordinate with consultants and contractors;
Familiarity with office software such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel;
Ability to use MicroStation CADD software and related Engineering and Surveying software packages;
Must have demonstrated ability to coordinate the efforts of others during assignments;
Ability to train others in track inspection and track layout methodology and usage of equipment;
Proven knowledge and experience operating various survey instruments (theodolites, total stations, digital levels etc.);
Ability to identify the root causes of problems related to track geometry, and suggest solutions;
A valid Province of Ontario Class “G” driver’s license;
