The Physician Assistant (PA) will be based at the Princess Margaret Hospital but will function at both sites: Toronto General Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. Working within a defined scope and with identified populations, the PA will work closely with the assigned supervising physician(s) within agreed upon guidelines and under specific medical directives.
The PA will function as a vital part of the team of surgeons, nurses, clinical fellows and allied health professionals providing care for gynecologic oncology patients in a physician-extender role. This will include but will not be limited to ambulatory clinic patient assessments, (exercising clinical skills, physical examination, interpretation of test results, ordering of tests and procedures) and comprehensive inpatient unit medical management. The PA will be offered training and education opportunities both at orientation and also at an ongoing basis. There is also potential for involvement in many of the research clinical trials available onsite.
The principal responsibilities include: utilizing and demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for Gynecologic Oncology patients. The PA will play a vital role on the interprofessional team and will have quality improvement, research and administrative responsibilities. There will also be opportunities to participate in policy or clinical pathway development as well as education and professional development. The PA will interact with other team members including staff gyne-oncologists, other PAs, trainees (residents and fellows), nurses, and other clinical and allied health staff both within the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The PA will perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program (Canadian/US) or equivalent.
Certified by the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada or National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (US)
Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills
Experience in a surgical/oncology setting preferred
Current UHN employees must have successfully completed their probationary period, have a good employee record along with satisfactory attendance in accordance with UHN’s attendance management program, to be eligible for consideration.
