University of Alberta Students’ Union Looking for Bar Manager – Balmoral Lounge at Edmonton, AB Full Time

The Bar Manager (official title will be Operations Manager ) is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Balmoral Lounge, the licensed restaurant/lounge operated by the UASU at the Saville Community Sports Centre on the University of Alberta’s South Campus. The position plays a key role in ensuring the overall financial and operational success of the business unit.

As a member of the UASU’s cross-functional business management team, this position will also provide assistance, support and relief to the managers and staff in other UASU business units, as well as receive support from managers of other business units.

THE JOB:

• Coordinate the smooth and effective operation of Balmoral Lounge, including both front-of-house and back-of-house activities.
• Supervise, schedule, train, develop, and motivate staff within the department, and exercise vigilance, control and awareness in the area of staff costs. Coordinate the hiring of staff and discipline of staff as required.
• Foster a culture of inclusivity, cooperation, communication, productivity, adaptability, personal development and a positive team attitude among all staff.
• Monitor and continually improve operational performance through superior customer service, overall value, product quality, staffing, presentation, pricing, facilities, equipment and overall experience.
• Handle queries from customers and staff, and ensure the resolution of customer service, operational and administrative issues as they arise.
• Work closely and collaboratively with the kitchen leadership team. Provide direct leadership to the kitchen as required.
• Monitor revenue and expense levels, and accordingly adjust staff levels, margins, offerings and other monetary factors as required.
• Assist in the development of operating and capital budgets.
• Perform, and/or ensure the completion of, administrative duties including but not limited to cash reconciliations, daily float preparation, inventory management, payables and receivables, point-of-sale programming and the ordering of products and supplies.
• Coordinate the effective execution of health and safety programs, marketing and promotional strategies, change management activities, staff training and development programs, and other operational activities as required.
• Perform the duties of all staff positions within the department on a regular, fill-in basis during periods of peak demand and during staff shortages.
• Maintain the operations in accordance with all relevant legislation, regulations and policies including those of the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission, Alberta Health Services, the City of Edmonton, the UASU and the University of Alberta.
• Work closely and collaboratively with the UASU’s conferencing & events department to facilitate special events and catering.
• Assist with research and planning activities.
• Maintain the overall appearance, condition and safety of the operations.
• Participate in management group and team meetings, and provide leadership at meetings as directed.
• Work closely and collaboratively with the Saville Community Sports Centre management and staff.
• Assist in developing, maintaining and implementing the overall strategic vision for the department.
• Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum two years of management/supervisory experience, or an acceptable combination of education and experience
• Minimum two years of experience in a restaurant, bar or other hospitality venue
• Superior interpersonal, communication, writing and analytical skills
• Demonstrated ability in leading teams in a positive, collaborative and effective manner
• Ability to work responsibly with little or no supervision
• Good knowledge of budgeting and human resource administration
• High level of creativity and motivation, and an embracer of innovation and change
• Ability to work with students, staff, administration and the general public with a dedication to providing excellent customer service
• Demonstrated commitment to high professional and ethical standards, and to embracing a diverse workplace
• Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Background Check as a condition of employment
• Successful candidates will be required to maintain ProServe, ProTect, Standard First Aid and provincially approved food safety certifications as conditions of continued employment

OTHER PREFERRED SKILLS:

• Awareness of, and/or experience with, the University of Alberta, the UASU, or similar organizations
• Training and/or experience in commercial kitchen operations
• Familiarity with Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission, Alberta Health Services and City of Edmonton regulations
• Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract
• Experience with point-of-sale systems or business applications, as well as general technology skills
• Experience in managing a unionized staff environment

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Number of hours worked per week may vary, with an average of 37.5 hours expected
• Willingness and ability to work varying hours on a regular basis including daytime, evenings and weekends
• Willingness and ability to perform the duties of all positions within the department, including extended periods of time standing/walking as well as heavy lifting (up to and including full beer kegs)
