This is a part-time 0.80FTE position (30 hours per week). Posted salary is for 1.0FTE. This position offers the possibility to increase to 1.0FTE full-time (37.5 hours per week).
This position is located within a health-care facility, therefore, the successful candidate will be required to provide verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by a provincial health mandate.
This offer is conditional upon successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.
JOB SUMMARY
The Play Outside Lab is led by Dr. Mariana Brussoni in the department of Pediatrics.
We are dedicated to studying and promoting children’s outdoor play by examining the effect of outdoor play on children, the influence of adults (parents, caregivers, educators, and others) on children’s play opportunities, the design of outdoor environments (play spaces, neighbourhoods) to support outdoor play, as well as policies to promote outdoor play. There are currently five multi-year research projects being conducted in the Play Outside Lab and we are looking for a research assistant who can work with research coordinators and other team members to provide general support in coordinating and carrying out research activities. The successful candidate will be primarily involved in assisting the coordination of research projects, maintaining all relevant project documentation, managing data collection/requests, undertaking data analysis and management, and collaborating with team members to initiate and facilitate the completion of specific research projects.
This position will be located at BC Children’s Hospital, Vancouver BC.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The RA will report directly to the research coordinators and the Principal Investigator (Dr. Brussoni), and interact with other members of the research team.
WORK PERFORMED
Work is routine in nature with established procedures. This includes:
- Assist in coordinating and facilitating research projects
- Provide administrative support and facilitate daily activities and meetings specific to research projects
- Participate in research project meetings including preparing agendas and minutes
- Prepare ethics application and amendment
- Ensure timely notification of issues/problems to the research coordinators
- Assist in conducting data collection, cleaning, entry and analysis
- Assist with conducting research work by performing specific assigned tasks, such as preparing and formatting research documents, including correspondence, research communications and reports, slide presentations, infographics, fact sheets, technical reports, newsletters, posters, presentations, event programs, and annual reports
- Conduct literature searches and reviews
- Assist in preparing publications and presentations
- Assist with event planning including venue or room-booking, attendee correspondence, preparing materials, room set-up/take down, taking minutes, etc.
- May attend scientific meetings and present posters and papers
- Perform general office duties, such as photocopying, scanning, updating various databases and lists
- Perform other related duties, as required
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
Errors made could influence the ability of researchers and research staff to meet deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the investigators, the research results, and the quality of the research program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The RA will work under the direct supervision of the research coordinator(s) and indirectly supervised by the PI.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
The Research Assistant will not be supervising others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Excellent computer skills and ability to learn and adapt to new and emerging software and systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) and Word Press
- Ability to perform data entry and cleaning in REDCap, Excel or a similar program
- Exceptional interpersonal, communications, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Prior experience with research coordination and research administration.
- Prior experience with quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed-methods research will be an asset
- Prior experience with statistical software (SPSS, R, SAS or other) and ArcGIS will be an asset
- Prior experience with survey tools (e.g., REDCap, Qualtrics) will be an asset
- Ability to handle data in a strictly confidential manner
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
