Your opportunity:
Working under general direction of the Financial Officer, the Financial and Grants Officer is responsible for the evaluation and forecast of spending of funds, following rules, guidelines and procedures of granting agencies and of the University; coordination and preparation of financial reports for principal investigators. You will be an essential resource to the faculty in the maintenance of funding accounts for grants and contracts; the forecasting, planning and monitoring of budget accounts; and the generation of reports and resolution of data anomalies and discrepancies.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
• Analyzing actual expenditures in comparison to budget and preparing reports for financial planning and funding terms compliance
• Acting as a first point of contact for purchasing enquiries
• Monitoring accounts and ensuring funds are available for purchases
• Identifying and resolving individual data anomalies and discrepancies
• Verifying the accuracy and completeness of information
• Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
• Implementing plans and process improvements for financial administration activities

Essential Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, commerce or finance or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
• Minimum three (3) years of related experience with financial analysis and reporting, preferably in a complex, educational environment with a strong research focus.
• Demonstrated experience analyzing financial data, producing reports, and identifying and resolving discrepancies.
• Experience monitoring and reconciling budgets to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations.
• Experience monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts.
• Experience implementing financial implications of agreements/contracts and interpreting and applying policies, guidelines and procedures.
• Thorough understanding of accounting fundamentals.
• Highly proficient computer skills, including MS Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, database management, Financial Information System (FIS) or similar financial software database.
• Ability to multi-task and meet competing deadlines effectively, delivering results in fast-paced environment with initiative and flexibility.
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and numerical competency.
• Sound judgment, excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate complex financial procedures to a range of audiences with minimal to professional financial knowledge.

Assets (Nonessential):

• Professional accounting designation or working towards a designation preferred.
