The School offers an undergraduate, Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), degree and three graduate programs (MSWF, MSWA, MSWI) that emphasize social justice, Indigenous, and anti-oppressive approaches to working with communities, families, and individuals. All of our programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE). UVic is also home to the Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement (CIRCLE) and the Indigenous Mentorship Network of the Pacific Northwest (IMN-PN).

This position will work exclusively with students in the BSW programs.

The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $56,424- $63,505 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $74,049 is available through annual performance increases.

This position provides academic advising for prospective, newly admitted and current BSW and MSW students in the School of Social Work. Advising is provided to both on campus and distance education students. There are 4 program streams within the BSW; the Standard BSW, the Child Welfare Specialization (CWS), the Indigenous Specialization (INS), and the Indigenous Child Welfare Specialization (INCW). There are 3 program streams within the MSW; the MSW Foundation (MSWF), MSW Advanced (MSWA), and MSW Indigenous Specialization (MSWI).

The Admissions and Academic Support Coordinator actively consults and collaborates with students to:

• Provide information and advice to support students’ planning and decision-making as it relates to their degree, course options and program flow.
• The incumbent responds to a broad range of queries from students, faculty and staff, including in-person, telephone and email communication.
• Is, or becomes familiar with School, faculty and university policies, and guidelines on graduate studies
• The incumbent also joins a team to coordinate the School’s annual applications process to the BSW and MSW programs and is responsible for a large portfolio of related administration.

This position requires Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW) plus minimum of 5 years of social work practice, preferably in a number of different settings, e.g., community based settings, health, child welfare, Indigenous agencies, policy and advocacy. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge requirements include:

• An understanding of UVic, HSD and School of Social Work undergraduate and graduate academic policies, procedures, and regulations;
• An understanding of the responsibilities of various UVic departments (e.g. SAFA, Undergraduate Admissions and Records, University Systems, University Health Services);
• Must have strong skills in the use of Microsoft Office and experience with databases;
• An understanding of field education practices and policies;
• knowledge of and commitment to Indigenous, de-colonizing, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive perspectives in Social Work;
• Knowledge of, and commitment to decolonial – equity practices;
• Knowledge and commitment to Black, Indigenous and People of color (BIPOC) scholarship.

• Competency from a decolonial, equity and social justice lens;
• Strong assessment, advising, planning, and problem solving skills;
• Excellent analytical, decolonial and critical thinking skills;
• Respectful communication skills, both written and verbal;

• Ability to work effectively with Black, Indigenous, People of Color, diverse abilities, LGBQTS2+ and with all levels of university personnel.

Assets or Preferences:

• Knowledge and/or an understanding of University registration systems, online technologies, and distance education tools;
• Knowledge of UVic information systems such as FAST, Banner, AIRS, HSData Advising (database).
