Position Summary:
The Payroll Officer is a member of the Finance and Payroll Services team. This position provides a high level of customer service to both internal and external customers such as Toronto School of Theology and applies their knowledge of payroll related legislation, University Policy, and established processes and procedures to ensure employees and other payees are paid in a manner that is compliant, accurate, and timely. The scope and nature of payroll in the university environment is extensive and varied and requires a broad understanding of various employment scenarios, earnings types, and taxation requirements as well as the ability to apply professional expertise and judgement.
This position works with considerable independence under the general direction of the Controller the incumbent is responsible for resolving problems and following up on issues related to payroll; processing payroll for monthly salaried employees & retirees; preparing cheque requisitions for various benefits & insurance agencies; answering employee/retiree inquires; compiling reports for actuaries and other users; and completing and filing in a timely on manner government mandated forms.
The Payroll Officer works as a member of the finance and payroll services team and as such is trained to complete work assigned to other members of the team during overload situations and /or during periods of illness or vacation. The Payroll Officer may also be required to assume the responsibilities of other team members from time to time, and assist other members of the team in any way possible when their own assigned work is complete.

Qualifications Required:
Education:
University Degree in payroll, human resources or accounting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Canadian Payroll Association, Payroll Compliance Practitioner courses and certification would be an asset. Must be willing to participate in professional development in order to keep abreast of changes in the field and maintain certification once attained.
Experience:
Minimum of four to five years related payroll and accounting experience, preferably in a University setting. Specialized knowledge of payroll and/ or benefits, as well as knowledge of human resources practices and related legislation
Other:
Strong service orientation and excellent client services skills. Multi-tasking ability: sound time management skills; excellent key boarding skills with high level accuracy and speed. Ability to set priorities and handle multiple deadlines; organized and manage a high volume of paper work. Demonstrated knowledge of basic payroll rules and regulations. Able to learn quickly; sound written and verbal communications skills; Accuracy and attention to detail in work and proven analytical and problem solving skills; Strong interpersonal; able to work well alone and as a team; initiative and able to work well under pressure. Experience with Ceridian and Microsoft Dynamics GP an asset.
