About Willow Lake Métis Nation
The Willow Lake Métis Nation is elected by its members to promote the Nation’s priorities for protecting the environment and strengthening the Aboriginal community. Throughout the Nation’s existence we have been dedicated and committed to working together for the betterment of the Métis community, maintaining our Indigenous culture and identity while also adapting to the inevitable change and impact that has surrounded us.
Willow Lake Métis people have lived on and derived their livelihood from the lands between Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray since the 1800s. WLM people continue to use the lands in this area to exercise their Indigenous rights, sustain our culture and identity as Métis people, support their community, and pass their knowledge and way of life on to their descendants. Since the middle of the 20th century, intensifying oil and gas exploration and the development of transportation networks in the region have led to significant changes in the lands known and used by WLM people and our ancestors.
The Willow Lake Métis Group (WLMG) was founded and operates with the strong willed, hardworking, and self-sufficient culture of the Métis people; our mandate is to become the bridge between reconciliation and community prosperity. We have built a new perspective on partnership in a time when we need it most!
We are proud to have established strong relationships with industry partners that allow us to become a strategic Indigenous industry partner. Working with partners allows us to provide full-service expertise for large scale projects.
