ACCOUNTANT
DEPARTMENT
The Chief Financial Officer and Secretary-Treasurer’s Department is responsible for the corporate secretary and business functions of the Division, including: the administrative management of the functions of the Board of Trustees, its committees and related matters; legal matters and liaison with the Division’s solicitors; contract administration; records management; and the administration of the business affairs of the Division.
The Accounts Payable Section is part of the CFO and Secretary-Treasurer’s Department and is responsible for processing for payment all supplier invoices for equipment, services and supplies payable by the Division.
Position:
Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Accountant is responsible for managing the accounts payable processing function; performing various other accounting and payment activities; acting as a consultant/resource to other WSD staff and vendors; preparing a variety of regular and ad hoc reports; and managing the operations and staff of the Accounts Payable Section.
Responsibilities:
· Manage the activities of the AP Section with goal to provide accurate and timely processing of accounts payable transactions.
· Review payment requests for accuracy, ensuring correct coding and proper authorization.
· Manage vendor maintenance and assist AP Clerks with resolving complex vendor issues.
· Reviews department output, identifying errors and assisting with corrections as required.
· Supervise AP department functions; review workloads, responsibilities, controls and processes to achieve maximum efficiency and accuracy.
· Manage staff change within AP; assist with recruitment and hiring; develop and execute a training plan for new hires.
· Manage and support AP staff; conduct regular performance reviews, provide feedback, identify professional development opportunities, assist employees with long-term career objectives; manage staff in accordance with HR policies and relevant collective agreements.
· Manage change affecting the unit; develop unit goals and objectives; participates in long term planning for the unit and for the CFO and Secretary-Treasurer’s Department as a whole.
· Create and develop AP reports on request and as required.
· Respond to AP inquiries and provide AP support to schools and departments.
· Monitor, analyze and record insurance costs by claim; act as an internal resource on insurance matters and as a liason between the Division and insurers.
· Assist with year-end functions, including account analysis and reconciliations and AP accruals.
· Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
A professional accounting designation is required. Minimum of five years of experience in a large accounting function is required. Previous supervisory experience is preferred. Excellent Microsoft Excel skills required. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in accounts payable processing is required. Knowledge of WSD financial and administrative programs and software would be an asset. A strong working knowledge of Division policies and procedures would be preferred.
