Why Literacy? Work with purpose at United for Literacy.
Canada’s literacy divide widens daily because so many people lack adequate literacy support. Bridging the literacy gap is something we can do. Solving systemic literacy challenges is key to advancing social equity and prosperity across our country. Literacy changes everything.
United for Literacy is a national, non-profit literacy organization that was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults, and families to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. United for Literacy is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.
United for Literacy is partnering with Community & Social Services Alberta to deliver Literacy and Essential Skills (LES) support to barriered individuals in workplace and community settings. Literacy and essential skills are defined as reading, writing, document use, numeracy, digital technology, thinking, oral communication, working with others, and continuous learning. The focus of this project is to increase access to support for entry-level or unemployed individuals seeking to adapt and succeed at work, improve their employability and gain promotions, to get and keep a job, and to access lifelong learning opportunities, including further education.
