Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary seeks a dynamic, innovative, communicative, and highly collaborative archivist. This is a two year Contingent Term appointment at the Assistant Archivist level, with the possibility of renewal. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2022. This position will work at the Taylor Family Digital Library on the main campus, as well as the High Density Library on the Spy Hill Campus.
Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of innovative information and cultural resources. Archives and Special Collections includes more than 10km of research holdings, including the Canadian Architectural Archives, the holdings from the former Glenbow archives and library, tens of thousands of audiovisual materials from the EMI Music Canada Archive, a growing pop culture collection of more than 13,000 items and the collections of the university’s Archives and Library branch at The Military Museums.
Position:
Reporting to the Director, Archival Operations, the Assistant Archivist is responsible for subject areas represented in the Glenbow Archival collection, providing advanced research, reference and instruction support, promoting the collection and its possible uses to the campus and broader community, responding to current donor queries, collection development and making archival materials accessible through appropriate metadata development. The archivist will play a key role in developing public facing initiatives and digital collections that increase the discovery and use of archival materials.
As an academic staff member, the incumbent will carry out research activities and service responsibilities commensurate with their rank.

Responsibilities:
Provides responsive and high-quality reference services and research support related to the holdings that form Archives and Special Collections
Actively promotes the use of Archives and Special Collections holdings through relevant outreach and educational activities, including classroom instruction and public presentations
Identifies, selects, acquires, appraises, accessions, and intellectually arranges archival records
Collaborates closely with the Archival Processing Manager to ensure that appropriate ingestion and descriptive practices are applied to acquired archival materials
Collaborates with Digital Services to identify and curate compelling digitization projects that enhance the discoverability of archival materials
Provides expedient leadership and expertise in the preparation of archival materials for submission to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board for certification as cultural property
Develops strong rapport and working relationships with colleagues in Libraries and Cultural Resources, faculties, campus business units, researchers, and donors
Responds to donor queries about prospective donations.
Regularly lifts and moves boxes of archival materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
Occasionally lifts and moves oversize collection items
Required Qualifications:
Graduate degree in archival studies or archival science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent, or a graduate degree in library or information studies, with a strong specialization in archives and records management
Studies in or knowledge of Canadian history, and Western Canadian history in particular
Minimum of two years of experience providing reference and research support, and teaching and classroom instruction on archival materials.
Knowledge of archival descriptive standards and archival theory
Demonstrated ability to create archival finding aids RAD and/or ISAD(G)
Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively, and creatively with multiple constituencies in a complex and rapidly changing environment
Proven track record of managing time and projects in a busy, deadline-driven environment
Demonstrated capacity to think creatively, to independently conduct research, to keep informed of developments in archival practice
Willingness to embrace complexity, explore solutions, and solve problems related to large archival fonds
Familiarity with copyright and privacy issues related to archival holdings
Ability to lift and move boxes or archival materials weighing up to 40 lbs
Experience writing and applying for grants
Salary and benefits:
