Education Outreach Program Coordinator – 6 positions available

Georgian Bay Forever (GBF) is a Canadian Charity focused on aquatic ecosystem research, education and protection.
Invasive Phragmites has been identified as one of the most destructive plant species in north America and is a great threat to native biodiversity and wetland habitat in Georgian Bay. GBF is hiring six (6) Community Coordinators across Georgian Bay, of which positions are based out of Matchedash Bay, Victoria Harbour OR Honey Harbour. Under the supervision of the GBF Project Coordinator, Education Outreach Program Coordinators will safely navigate the waters of Georgian Bay in the prescribed areas and educate the public in environmental protection. Activities will include education, mapping, recruiting and organizing volunteers; as well as cutting invasive Phragmites.
The purpose of the education will be to teach the public about how to identify and eradicate invasive Phragmites on their coastal property, or where permitted, public property.
*GBF will ensure all Ontario public health advisories are followed by its staff in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Under current conditions (February, 2022), education to the community will be done through digital, social and telephone interactions when needed. Education could include undertaking dock visits, speaking at community association meetings, and organizing group talks and cuts. Interactions between staff and the community will follow public health coronavirus advisories. GBF requires all staff to be fully vaccinated (2 doses) prior to the start date.
Staff will be educated to inform prospective volunteers on protocols that account for physical distancing to match Ontario public policy for stopping the spread of the coronavirus.
Mapping activities and cutting removal activities will follow public advisories on coronavirus and standard safety protocols.
GBF works with Townships, Municipalities, Community and stakeholder groups such as Ontario Parks, Parks Canada, MTO and the Ontario Phragmites Working Group and Ontario Invasive Plant Council.
Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies Required:
· Must possess a valid driver’s license and Pleasure Craft Operator Card
· Competency with marine navigation, charts and how to operate GPS systems.
· Good knowledge of the coastal waters of Georgian Bay, especially the above noted areas is an asset.
· Competency operating a motorized boat and be comfortable on the water.
· Must have good interpersonal skills and competently represent GBF in the online and physical community.
· Demonstrated ability to manage time and co-ordinate the community to take action and communicate safety protocols.
· Comfortable public speaking and able to create and make public presentations online and offline.
· Must be available to work weekends.
· Ability to work long days in varying weather conditions.
· Have access to a smartphone, laptop/computer and WIFI to use Google Maps, Field Maps, camera, photo archive, emails, Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
· Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping is considered an asset.
· Be in good physical condition and able to operate manual and powered cutting tools.
· Be confident in the water and a competent swimmer with an excellent knowledge of water safety practices.
· Keep excellent records and documentation on all activities and participants; and provide reporting on activities, map and record co-ordinates of invasive Phragmites stands.
· Access to a personal boat is considered an asset. GBF will pay parking fees, mileage for cars and gas money for boats.
· Must have accommodations in the area and be able to get to Honey Harbour, Tay or Waubaushene at the start of a workday depending on the location you are hired for.
Salary: $16 per hour
Contract dates: This entry-level full-time contract position will begin May 30th and end September 2nd, 2022.
Hours: A normal work-week will be 35 hours. This position will require some weekend work.
