School District No. 42 (SD42) meets the learning needs of approximately 16,000 students of all ages in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and is defined by its determination to keep student learning and growth at the heart of all its decisions. With an annual budget of over $200M and over 2,000 staff, the school district provides K-12 educational services in 22 elementary schools, six secondary schools, and two alternate schools. It also provides a variety of certificate programs and relevant quality life-long learning opportunities through Ridge Meadows College and Continuing Education.
SD42 is looking for qualified applicants for a 0.65 FTE Continuing Aboriginal Education teacher position effective September 1, 2024. The required knowledge and skills include: a thorough knowledge of Indigenous traditions, knowledges, and cultures of peoples who have resided on Turtle Island since time immemorial inclusive of understanding the historical and contemporary lived experience in these areas; the ability to assist with the bridging of cultures; the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing and if required, some proficiency in an Indigenous language; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and their families from diverse cultures and communities; the ability to support professional educators with understanding an Indigenous worldview and ways of knowing; the knowledge of the BC Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act Action Plan, Ministry of Education Equity in Action planning (including recommendation of SD42 report), and the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; the ability to integrate, in consultation with school based teachers, work to enhance the core curriculum at the appropriate grade levels(s). Applicants are advised that pursuant to “Special Program” approval of Section 42(3) of the Human Rights Code by the BC Human Rights Commission, preference may be given to applications of Aboriginal Ancestry, so should clearly indicate their ancestry/status on their application.
The Applicant Will Possess
Certification with the Teacher Regulation Branch,
Experience working with students of ancestry.
This is a 0.65 FTE continuing itinerant assignment effective September 1, 2024.
