POSITION SUMMARY:

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), a global leader in natural history and world cultures, is embarking on a transformative journey to revolutionize its public engagement initiatives. For over 80 years, ROMKids Camp has been at the forefront of providing imaginative and enriching experiences to Toronto’s youth. The ROM Kids Studio Assistant plays a pivotal role in the execution and management of ROMKids Camp activities, a diverse and experiential day camp inspired by the collections and research of one of the world’s leading museums, ROM (Royal Ontario Museum). This role calls for someone who is passionate about culture, the arts, natural history, and science, and who is keen on facilitating a transformative educational experience for children. The Assistant is responsible for a wide range of tasks from administrative duties to direct oversight of camp operations, ensuring a safe, educational, and enriching environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervise the daily routine of the camp, including the supervision of breaks and lunches.
• Manage and balance the camp budget to ensure optimal use of funds.
• Oversee the sourcing and acquisition of camp supplies and maintain a thorough inventory of all required materials.
• Oversee lab and gallery assignments and maintain cleanliness in all ROMKids spaces.
• Ensure that camp materials and activities are compliant with health and safety standards and procedures.
• Assist with staff scheduling and payroll functions, ensuring efficient operation of the camp.
• Responsible for first aid reporting and maintaining records of any health and safety incidents.
• Collect, organize, and follow up on any incident reports to ensure resolution and future prevention.
• Manage and supervise lead assistants, assistant staff, and the volunteer team to ensure a high standard of service.
• Act as the main point of contact for all caregiver questions and concerns, fostering good relationships between the camp and families.
• Perform other tasks as required, such as distributing t-shirts, aiding with registration requests, and overseeing pre-care or extended care options.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A Post-Secondary degree or its equivalent in a museum-related field such as art, culture, history, or nature is required. Degrees in educational fields like Early Childhood Education or Bachelor of Education are also highly valued.
• A minimum of three years of hands-on experience working with children in an educational or camp setting is essential.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are required for effectively liaising between children, caregivers, and staff.
• Strong conflict resolution skills are necessary for maintaining a harmonious and productive camp environment.
• A solid understanding and implementation of effective behavior and classroom management techniques are crucial.
• Formal teaching qualifications, as well as First Aid and CPR certifications, are considered significant assets.
• Additional expertise or education in areas like film/video production, photography, ceramics, leadership training, storytelling, environmental education, illustration, or tabletop gaming will be considered advantageous.
• Candidates must be prepared to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends, evenings, and occasional overnight programs.
