Position: General Accountant
Department: Accounting and Finance
Reports to: VP Finance
The Seegmiller Group is searching for a General Accountant to join our finance team!
The General Accountant will perform a range of accounting functions to support the Finance department, including month end accounting entries, general ledger reconciliations, fixed asset management and daily/monthly banking activities. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, a ‘can do’ positive attitude and be willing to think outside the box for process improvements.

E. & E. Seegmiller Limited is an excavation and construction company founded in 1927, when twin brothers Egbert and Edgar Seegmiller pooled their resources to purchase a Keystone steam shovel. The first major roadwork involved excavation for the highway from Waterloo to Elmira, which was accomplished primarily by day labourers using shovels and horse-drawn wagons. Since that time, there is hardly a road in the region that Seegmiller has not worked on. Today E. & E. Seegmiller is a major civil contractor in the Province of Ontario, and the group of companies specializes in road construction, paving, aggregate, custom crushing and ready-mix.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the performance of month end functions, including but not limited to – balance sheet account reconciliations, month end accruals and variance to budget analyses
- Build professional relationships with the internal operations team members to gather and assist in investigating variances and discrepancies
- Daily and month end bank reconciliations to ensure accurate AR/AP sub-ledgers and aging
- Preparation and posting of month end journal entries.
- Maintenance of the fixed asset sub-ledger including setting up new equipment/assets, creating long term debt schedules and posting associated JEs for several entities
- Maintain fleet records including additions/disposals, assisting with insurance renewal data, annual CVOR I & II where required, and fuel billing for internal and external customers
- Intercompany reconciliations
- Ad-hoc projects as required
Skills & Qualifications:
- Pursuing or holding an accounting designation (CPA, CA; CPA, CMA; CPA, CGA) preferred or commensurate experience and/or education
- Ability to maintain discretion with confidential information and mature judgement
- Strong initiative to complete tasks and work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to think critically and problem solve to resolve issues as they arise
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate analyses according to various criteria under deadline driven timelines
- Full cycle accounting including monthly, quarterly and annual reporting
- Must be a self-starter and able to manage competing priorities
- Proficiency in utilizing computer software including ERPs, Microsoft Excel (advanced including creating financial formulas and workbooks) and other Microsoft programs
- Construction industry experience considered an asset
