Director, Investment Operations

UBC Investment Management is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of British Columbia, providing professional investment management for the UBC Endowment Fund, Staff Pension Plan and other UBC-related funds. The funds are invested globally across all major public and private asset classes and in aggregate value exceed $5.8 billion.
UBC Investment Management is a close-knit team of professionals focused on providing investment and service excellence to each of the funds we manage. The Director of Investment Operations will report to the CEO of UBC Investment Management and will provide oversight across all investment operations functions. The candidate will work with the manager selection team and total portfolio management teams to provide analysis, reporting, and systems that support their research and decision making.
In addition, the candidate will oversee the investment operations team and be responsible for all operations, compliance, and reporting functions at UBC Investment Management. The candidate will be committed to and passionate about supporting the University of British Columbia’s mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
The following details are the most important duties of the position but is not intended to be all-inclusive. A broad understanding of complex institutional investment portfolio operations and procedures is desirable.
● Investment operations: Oversee all day-to-day operations including accounting, cash management, investment execution, document management, reporting.
● Reporting: Ensure all internal and board reporting is generated accurately and by the set deadline. Work with members of the team to develop additional reporting or modify existing reporting, when necessary.
● Risk management: Establish and coordinate reporting to allow the investment team to better understand and manage portfolio risk, evaluate investments, and enhance portfolio management decisions.
● Compliance monitoring and corporate governance: Manage internal compliance of the investment program, ensuring that investment managers comply with established investment guidelines. Oversee corporate governance and proxy voting activities.
● Audit and tax: Assist with tax and audit related work for the funds we manage and corporate needs.
● Procedures and internal controls: Maintain and establish the operational and risk management procedures as well as internal controls. Stay current on new concepts applied to investment operations by peers and lead any changes to procedures within the investment operations and risk management functions.
● Vendor management: Oversee and maintain third party providers including technology vendors, custodian, consultants, auditors, and tax advisors. Stay current on new providers in the market, proactively recommend any changes that should be considered, and lead the implementation of any changes to providers, processes, or services.
● Staff development and management: Recruit, train, and manage all investment operations team members.
Qualifications
● The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree plus 10-15 years of direct, relevant work experience in investment operations and/or risk management. Additional qualifications include:
● Exposure to multi-asset class portfolios that include alternative investments.
● Knowledge of how to operationally support derivative investments.
● Superior organizational skills with an ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
● Strong oral and written communication skills.
● Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail as well as proficiency in using Microsoft Excel; familiarity with other investment-related technology a plus.
● Ability to work alongside a small team in an open and collegial environment that stresses continuous learning and proactive problem solving.
● High degree of integrity and professionalism.
● Experience in mentoring and managing other investment operations and risk management personnel.
● Eligible to work in Canada.
Contact Details
UBC Investment Management will consider candidates with varying levels of experience. Total compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications but is expected to have a base salary in the range of C$150,000 – C$200,000. The successful candidate will be eligible for discretionary incentive compensation in accordance with UBC Investment Management’s Total Rewards Policy. UBC Investment Management is seeking a successful candidate that will reside in the Greater Vancouver area.
