University of Alberta Looking for College General Manager at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Full Time

The University of Alberta is seeking to hire an experienced leader to oversee the administration and operational management of the College of Health Sciences which includes the faculties of Nursing; Medicine and Dentistry; Rehabilitation Medicine; Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation; and the School of Public Health.

The College General Manager (CGM) is critical to the success of the University’s new administrative academic model – responsible for providing leadership to ensure the successful delivery of administrative service excellence throughout the college. The CGM works collegially with the Senior Partners of each administrative function (HR, Finance, IT, Engagement, Research Admin, etc ) and with the Faculty General M anagers to provide operational leadership and administrative services to the College.

Accountabilities

Reporting directly to the College Dean and Vice Provost and as a member of the College’s leadership team and its leadership committees, you will provide expert advice and counsel to the dean and the faculty leadership team and are an experienced, collaborative, intuitive and strategic influencer proficient in each of the core responsibilities of the position. You will align administrative services across the faculties within the college and provide oversight over college administrative operations.

To excel as a highly effective college general manager, you will:

• develop and lead initiatives and projects to establish and maintain the operations of the college;
• offer expert advice, knowledge, critical analysis and solutions based on an in-depth understanding of the college and each faculty’s core mission, vision and strategic objectives;
• foster collaborative relationships with other CGMs, faculty deans, faculty general managers, faculties’ leadership teams, service providers, academic program areas, research centres & institutes, employees and key stakeholders to understand their current and emerging administrative and academic needs, constraints, opportunities and challenges;
• provide recommendations, options and approaches for appropriate collaboration between faculties and develop initiatives of mutual benefit encouraging diverse functions to operate collaboratively to deliver outcomes;
• identify solutions for systemic and recurring college issues by actively listening, gathering, interpreting, synthesizing and evaluating information within the college and across the University;
• lead and coordinate effective communication to ensure a broad, deep and consistent understanding of key priorities;
• engage with senior partners and service providers to broker resources and services from central and embedded functions to ensure the colleges’ and faculty’s goals and objectives are achieved;
• in collaboration with a Senior Partner (HR) and Faculty Relations Office, provide advice to the college dean on strategic human resource issues (e.g.workforce planning, succession planning, professional development);
• in collaboration with a Senior Partner (Finance), develop and maintain the college budget, manage college finances, and plan, monitor and manage expenses for joint initiatives;
• oversee risk and compliance management for the college in alignment with the University’s risk management strategy;
• in partnership with Facilities and Operations and the faculties, manage and review the college’s facilities, buildings and other specialized infrastructure to ensure alignment with college needs;
• create an environment where diverse ideas, perspectives and achievements are recognized, rewarded and celebrated and take action to support establishing a diverse workforce reflective of the broader community, by identifying and working to remove barriers to access;
• encourage innovation and advocate for and influence progressive change throughout the college; and
• demonstrate persuasive, engaging, clear and credible communication to gain support and commitment in varied situations from a wide variety of audiences.

Desired Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of pro gressive leadership experience, overseeing complex administrative, academic-support and/or service based functions, supplemented with a masters level degree in a related field. Experience within a large post-secondary environment is preferred. Combinations of experience, expertise , and education will be considered .

The candidate should have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to negotiate, consult, influence and build consensus at the highest levels; exceptional analytical an d conceptual skills with proven ability to adapt to new situations and develop creative solutions to complex strategic and operational challenges; outstanding planning skills and a demonstrated ability to establish and communicate a long-term strategic vis ion and manage large-scale resources in a large, complex organization; superior leadership and management skills including a strong financial acumen and experience leading transformational change.
